How to Manage Oyster Mushrooms When They Enter The Coral Stage?
During the coral stage, the primordium of the mushroom begins to differentiate into the stipe and cap, taking on a coral-like shape, which is why it is referred to as the "coral stage." Effective management at this stage is critical for ensuring healthy mushroom development. Key management considerations include:
- Ventilation: Once the coral stage is reached, it is essential to open the vents on both sides of the cultivation area to allow for continuous air convection, 24 hours a day. The airflow should gradually increase as the mushrooms progress from the coral stage to the mushroom stage. Insufficient ventilation or stagnant air will result in mushrooms that only develop a stipe without forming a cap, leading to a type of enoki mushroom growth.
- Controlled Ventilation: Ventilation during the coral stage should be done carefully, adjusting the vent openings to regulate airflow. At this stage, the mushrooms require less oxygen, so the vents should generally be opened just a quarter. If the airflow is too strong, it can cause the mushrooms to dry out, negatively impacting growth.
- Humidity Management: Humidity remains crucial during the coral stage. Spraying water once a day is typically sufficient, but during dry weather, additional moisture can be applied to the mushroom bodies to prevent drying out and promote proper differentiation of the cap and stipe.
- Bud Thinning: To encourage the growth of larger mushrooms, it is important to thin out excess buds. Too many buds can lead to competition for nutrients, resulting in smaller mushrooms and an increased number of deformed specimens. Ensuring proper bud spacing allows the remaining mushrooms to grow more robustly.
By focusing on proper ventilation, humidity, and bud management during the coral stage, mushroom growers can optimize the conditions for healthy and high-quality mushroom production.
